Tax season can be a stressful time of year, especially for those who can't afford to hire a professional tax preparer. Luckily, there are several free tax services available in Brooklyn that can help alleviate the burden and take the guesswork out of filing your taxes.
If you're inclined to do your taxes yourself, you can file for free online using Direct File, a self-service portal that allows taxpayers to file in the comfort of their homes using their smartphones, tablets or computers. New Yorkers with last year's income of up to $200,000 or $250,000 if filing a joint return may qualify to use the service. Alternative e-file options are available for New Yorkers who may not meet the eligibility criteria.
If you need help, however, there are plenty of community organizations and great resources for free tax assistance to make sure you are prepared for Tax Day, which is on April 15.
The Internal Revenue Service also has an online list of free tax filing services for older Americans.
One thing to note: Some of these services have eligibility requirements, mostly based on income. To see if you qualify, click the websites below for more information.
