The Brooklyn Children's Museum (BCM) is ushering in the spooky season with a challenge: help name three tarantulas, the musuem's newest animal residents.

Children, families and teachers can enter the contest by visiting BCM’s new STEM makerspace, Nature’s Engineers, where the current hands-on project, "Arachnid Architecture," invites kids to construct their own spider webs and test their designs, according to a press release.

While there, participants can meet the museum’s three green-bottle blue tarantulas and submit their name ideas on postcards, which will be collected throughout the month.

“The creativity of New York City's kids is unmatched, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with,” said Atiba T. Edwards, president and chief executive officer of Brooklyn Children’s Museum. “We hope this fun contest sparks children’s curiosity and imagination. It's a wonderful opportunity to explore the Museum, engage in spider-inspired engineering, or even check out some great books at the Brower Park Library branch right here in our building.”

The last day to submit entries is Sunday, Oct. 27, during the Museum’s Halloween celebration, where visitors are encouraged to dress up in spider costumes. On Halloween Day, Oct. 31, the museum will reveal the top name finalists on its Instagram page (@bcmkids), allowing the public to vote on their favorites through a poll.

The winning names will be announced on Nov. 1, when the newly named tarantulas will be formally reintroduced to their fans.
