New York City Chief Service Officer Laura Rog said the agency is in the final stages of recruitment for its AmeriCorps program, which provides residents 18 and older a chance to work in a public sector.

Each year, NYC Service’s AmeriCorps program provides participants with professional experience in the public sector, which includes 200-plus hours of development and training, along with over $5,000 for education costs, according to a news release.

Taking place over a 10-month term that spans from September through June, prospective AmeriCorps members get the chance to work for one of many participating city agencies or local nonprofits, including the Brooklyn Public Library and Brownsville Health Action Center.

The application deadline is June 30.

Rog, who has past experience participating in AmeriCorps, credits the program for providing her with the practical skills needed to succeed in her career field.

“I first started my career in public service as an AmeriCorps member, an experience that gave me the real-world skills that brought what I had learned in college to life,” said Rog.

“Most importantly, my AmeriCorps year gave me the opportunity to direct my passion and energy into building lifelong skills that showed me how to make a real impact in my local community – serving in AmeriCorps fortified my commitment to public service and I am so proud to offer more than a hundred AmeriCorps opportunities for New Yorkers to shape their future and contribute to safer, livable communities in every borough,” she added.

About 20% of positions have already been filled as of early June and more than 2,000 applicants starting to work through their applications ahead of the deadline, the news release said.
