The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation kicked off its lifeguard recruitment season for summer 2025 with qualifying tests at Fort Hamilton High School on Dec. 8.

The event marked the first round of tryouts for lifeguards tasked with safeguarding swimmers at the city’s beaches and outdoor pools, according to a press release.

The lifeguard qualifying process includes a swim test and vision exam, and NYC Parks offers a free Swim Prep program, for applicants requiring extra preparation to improve their swim speed, endurance and stroke technique.

NYC Parks has increased seasonal lifeguard wages to $22 per hour, and returning lifeguards are eligible for a $1,000 bonus if they work during peak season. The program also offers a modified certification exam for shallow water pools for new guards.

NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue encouraged eligible New Yorkers to join the city's cohort of lifeguards for next summer and "work at some of the city's most iconic summer locations."

"Lifeguard recruitment for next summer is already in full swing, and we're asking all New Yorkers to spread the word about this incredible opportunity to serve the city by safeguarding swimmers at our beaches and pools," she said. "With increased wages and modifications to make the certification test more accessible, there's never been a better time to join our lifeguard ranks."

In addition to Fort Hamilton High School, Bushwick High School and St. John’s Recreation Center will host qualifying tests over the coming months, alongside sites in other boroughs. Test sessions will continue through early March 2025, with dates added on a rolling basis.
