The Mixteca Organization received $2.5 million in capital funding to purchase a permanent home and establish the first community center owned by a Mexican organization in the Sunset Park area.
The funds include $1 million from Council Member Alexa Avilés, $1.25 million from Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and $250,000 from Speaker Adrienne Adams, according to a news release.
"We are overjoyed and deeply grateful for this incredible support," said Lorena Kourousias, the executive director of Mixteca. "This funding not only helps us secure a permanent home for Mixteca but also empowers us to expand our vital programs that support the immigrant community in Brooklyn and beyond."
The acquisition of a building will support the advancement of services Mixteca has been offering to the Latinx and Indigenous community in Brooklyn for nearly 25 years, which include mental health, education, community health, workforce development, social services, legal support and cultural programming.
A stable and dedicated space will ensure the continued impact of Mixteca’s programs, providing a safe and welcoming environment for immigrants seeking support and resources as they make New York City their new home, the press release said.
“I’m thrilled and humbled by the support we’ve received,” said Alma Rosa Montanez, Mixteca's board chair. “Having a permanent home will allow us to support our most recent New Yorkers for years to come.”
“When I announced my Nonprofit Acquisition Fund, it was precisely nonprofits like Mixteca that I hoped to help acquire their permanent home in Brooklyn,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. “For decades now, Mixteca has been filling gaps in city services to meet the needs of our immigrant neighbors. Every day, their home in Sunset Park is bustling – full of people and families who know they can trust Mixteca to help with everything from accessing city benefits to learning English and preparing healthy meals. I am so grateful to Mixteca’s incredible work and for offering a shining example of the partnerships that are possible with my office.”
