President Gina Duncan will step down from her position at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in June.

The Board of Directors will oversee the vetting of a Duncan's successor, the academy said in a press release on Feb. 19.

BAM commended Duncan, who has been at the helm since 2022, for her role in the institution’s post-pandemic recovery. Under her leadership, the organization completed a strategic plan aimed at ensuring financial stability and expanding its reach.

Prior to this appointment, Duncan had previously served as BAM's first vice president of film and strategic programming.

Under her leadership, the organization’s repertory programming centered underrepresented voices in cinema and was recognized as a “vital” part of the New York film landscape by The New York Times, and its film program flourished, the institution said.

Since 2022, the organization recorded an increase in the number of performances by 50% compared to pandemic levels and boosted audience attendance by 41%.

Duncan expressed gratitude for her time at BAM, highlighting the institution’s unique role in the arts community.

“There is no place quite like BAM, and it's been an incredible honor to serve as president during such a pivotal moment for our industry,” said Duncan.

BAM Board Chair Diane L. Max said Duncan leaves the institution "well-positioned and poised for success for years to come.”

“As president, Gina’s efforts have enhanced BAM’s promise and fortified the institution’s role as a premiere home for both established and emerging artists and a place welcoming to all audiences,” said Max.
