Friends of Firefighters, a nonprofit supporting members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and their families with free, confidential mental health services, will hold its annual gala on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024, at the Edison Ballroom.
This event aims to raise crucial funds to meet the increasing demand for mental health support for both active and retired firefighters, according to a press release.
Since 9/11, over 360 FDNY members have died from related illnesses, surpassing the 343 lost in the attacks, and firefighter suicide rates are nearly double the national average, the press release said.
The gala will honor several distinguished members of the FDNY. The Legacy Award will be presented to the FDNY Ceremonial Unit, led by Firefighter Joe LaPointe, who organizes funerals and services for fallen firefighters, including those who died from 9/11-related illnesses.
FDNY Assistant Commissioner Evelyn Tesoriero, head of the Family Assistance Unit, will receive the Person of the Year Award as she retires after 40 years of service. Motorola Solutions will also be recognized with the Public Service Award, and Firefighters Daniel Reilly and Vincent DeGennarro will receive the Step-Up Award for their dedication.
Proceeds from the gala will support the nonprofit's expanding programs, including a Peer Support Program, which offers firefighters a safe space to discuss their experiences, and “The Bravest Children” initiative, which extends mental health services to the children of FDNY members. Last year, Friends of Firefighters provided a record 4,500 counseling sessions, underscoring the need for continued support.
Notable attendees will include comedian Rachel Feinstein and “Impractical Joker” Brian Quinn, a former FDNY firefighter. To learn more about the nonprofit or to donate, click here.
