The Brooklyn nonprofit Big Apple Leadership Academy for the Arts held a dance on Dec. 17, to celebrate young ladies in the community and the men who are helping to raise them.
The dance, held at Restoration Plaza in Bedford Stuyvesant, was a moment to dress up, have fun and acknowledge the importance of family.
Dr. Jada John, the executive director of the nonprofit, emphasized that too many children in Brooklyn grow up without knowing their fathers. That’s why celebrating strong father-daughter relationships made this event especially meaningful, she said.
"We often don't hear about the amazing fathers that do come out to support their children and do everything they can for their families, Dr. John said. "What we're doing is elevating the men who are doing just that. We see them, we feel them and we appreciate them."
