The Brooklyn Public Library has crafted a new book list filled with information about the upcoming presidential election along with topics like political party conventions in order to help patrons understand the current headlines.
The librarian-curated list, BKLYN BookMatch: Books to Contextualize This Week in Politics, is designed as a starting point for understanding these complex topics, according to a news release.
The list includes books on the presidential election process, the electoral college, a history of political parties, and leadership in difficult times. Two selections, 1968: The Year that Rocked the World by Mark Kurlansky and The Year the Dream Died: Revisiting 1968 in America by Jules Witcover, examine 1968, the last time an incumbent president chose not to seek a second term.
Other books on the list consider the fragility of democracy and the role of politics in uniting and dividing neighbors.
The list also includes an illustrated guide which covers the history of voting in the United States and is designed for “future voters.”
The complete list can be found here.
