BRIC partnered with University Settlement to launch the Digital Equity Initiative, a program aimed at bridging the digital divide across generations in Brooklyn.
The initiative, announced on Nov. 15, offers free workshops for teenagers and older adults, focusing on content creation and digital literacy, according to a press release.
"Serving New Yorkers – especially those who don't benefit from power and privilege – through media education and the arts are at the heart of what BRIC does every day," said Wes Jackson, president of BRIC.
The initiative, supported by a $40,000 grant from Spectrum, includes two distinct programs at the University Settlement’s Atlantic Terminal location at 501 Carlton Ave.:

Digital Creator Youth Workshop Series
Targeting young aspiring content creators, this program runs weekly on Thursdays from 4:30pm to 6:00pm through Dec. 19. Participants will learn:- Digital storytelling and narrative techniques
- Professional video and podcast production
- Personal brand development on social media
- Smartphone optimization for content creation

Unlocking Your Smartphone’s Potential for Older Adults
Designed for seniors, this series takes place on Thursdays from 12:00pm to 2:00pm through Dec. 19, covering:- Smartphone navigation and customization basics
- Internet safety and secure browsing
- Social media usage
- Text, image, and audio storytelling
- Photography skills and editing
“New Yorkers with smartphones are walking around with incredibly powerful creative problem-solving tools in their pockets – but the knowledge required to fully leverage these technologies isn’t always accessible for our neighbors,” said Steven Portericker, chief program and equity officer at University Settlement.
