Haiti Cultural Exchange, (HCX) the nonprofit organization established to develop, present and promote the cultural expressions of the Haitian people, is currently accepting applications for the Lakou NOU 2024 Artists-in-Residence program.

HCX created the Lakou NOU artist residency in 2016, providing four artists of Haitian descent with the opportunity to create and present new work by connecting their skills and talents to four historic Brooklyn neighborhoods, home to generations of Haitians and Haitian-Americans, in Crown Heights, Canarsie, East Flatbush and Flatbush, according to a press release.

The residency includes a $7,500 stipend for the development, implementation, documentation and evaluation of projects.

HCX helps facilitate the formation of partnerships between selected artists and neighborhood entities, including community gardens, nonprofit organizations, small businesses and local cultural institutions.

These relationships engage artists with challenges and opportunities unique to each Lakou and afford access to valuable resources, such as spaces for exhibition or a platform for community conversations.

Over the course of nine months, artists-in-residence will grow their creative projects in these communities. Artists-in-residence also interact with each other as a cohort through discussion and support around topics relevant to Lakou NOU projects and participate in facilitated professional development opportunities and mentorship on topics such as tools for cultural preservation, art in public spaces, engagement in social practice and implementation/evaluation of community programming.

The application is available at the following link: 2024 Lakou NOU artist residency application. The deadline to apply is Friday, August 9.
