Local students from Global Kids met with Ambassador François Jackman to learn about Barbados, his previous roles, and his current position as the permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations on May 23. Global Kids is a local Brooklyn nonprofit that develops youth leaders through dynamic global education and leadership development programs.
Founded in 1989, Global Kids has been at the forefront of developing and implementing culturally relevant, anti-racist youth development and academic enrichment programs for over three decades.
“It is important to provide young people with opportunities develop their understanding and desire to address complex issues. Programs like this discussion with Ambassador Jackman, our Global Kids Youth Conference and more, help our students to gain new perspectives beyond the classroom and their communities and learn how they can advocate for issues that are impacting our world,” said Dominique Jones, executive director of Global Kids.
"Through this impactful conversation, the students we serve were given a unique opportunity to learn about Barbados, the issues that are currently affecting the country, and Ambassador Jackman’s important role. We are grateful to Ambassador Jackman for taking the time to visit our students, and for our partnership with the NYC Mayor’s Office for International Affairs to engage our students in the NYC Junior Ambassadors program.”
As part of the NYC Junior Ambassadors program with the New York Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, the Global Kids had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the Ambassador’s experiences.
“Our meeting with Ambassador Jackman was intriguing. The questions we asked helped me gain insight into how his role impacts society as a whole. It was interesting to learn how nations can work together to make change in the world, and how those decisions can impact the Earth both positively and negatively.” said Athena, a 9th grade Global Kids student from the High School for Public Service.
