Earlier this year, the Supreme Court overturned the right to an abortion in Dobbs v. Jackson. As part of Justice Clarence Thomas' concurring opinion, he wrote they “should reconsider all of this Court's substantive due process precedents,” which could walk back the rights of people in same-sex and interracial marriages.
On Dec. 8, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the incoming Democratic leader and a member of the judiciary committee, voted to send H.R. 8404, the Respect for Marriage Act, to President Joseph Biden for his signature.
The bipartisan legislation will protect marriage equality for same-sex and interracial couples.
“I urge my colleagues to support the Respect for Marriage Act, respect marriage, respect freedom, respect liberty and justice for all,” said Jefferies.
Jefferies has been instrumental in drafting the legislative language to protect the marriage rights of interracial couples.
