If you were wondering why subway service was suspended recently for four days between Atlantic Ave.-Barclays Ctr. and Franklin Ave., it was because of necessary FASTRACK repairs.
Beginning January 27, New York City Transit's (NYCT) FASTRACK maintenance program started work on the tracks along the 2, 3 and 4 lines that run through Brooklyn's Crown Heights and the downtown area, which were recently completed.
Hundreds of subway maintenance workers had been deployed in the lower tunnels and stations inspecting and repairing components of the lines-- fix-up efforts necessary to keeping the lines safe.
In total, crews removed 173,847 pounds of scrap and debris, scraped and cleaned 19,736 linear feet of track, replaced 201 tie blocks and installed 657 plates.
They also cleared 223 identified defects, scraped and cleaned 13,680 feet of track under and around the third rail.
As it pertained to infrastructure, crews repaired or replaced 300 linear feet of handrail, replaced 317 light bulbs, cleaned 450 linear feet of track drain and sealed 53 leaks.
The repair efforts were the first ever for FASTRACK to the 2, 3 and 4 lines. The repairs were completed successfully, and the lines began operating agains by February 1.
