Brooklyn Man Sentenced For Fatal Stabbing of Ex-Girlfriend in Bed-Stuy

James Brown, 65, was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2022 fatal stabbing of Cynthia McLeod in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

A Brooklyn man on Tuesday was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

James Brown, 65, was convicted of second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon following a jury trial on Jan. 23, according to a press release.

Prosecutors said the attack occurred on May 15, 2022, at about 11:00am when Brown waited on the corner of Marcus Garvey Boulevard and Van Buren Street, across from the apartment building of his former girlfriend, Cynthia McLeod, 55. When McLeod approached the intersection, Brown pulled a knuckle knife from his backpack and stabbed her twice in the neck and in the face.

McLeod managed to walk into a nearby bodega where she asked they call 911. Brown followed her inside, went behind the counter, grabbed her, and threw her to the ground before stabbing her more than 10 times in the face, neck, and torso, according to the evidence presented at trial.

Brown allegedly told police the victim owed him money. He was arrested at the scene.

“This was a brutal and premeditated attack in broad daylight that took an innocent woman’s life in a shocking act of cruelty," said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzales.
