Black VegFest, an annual festival that provides a platform and space for people to define what food, health and the vegan community looks like from a Black perspective, will be held on Saturday, August 17 in Crown Heights.

The festival, which educates and encourages new vegans, as well as provide opportunities for the growth of veteran vegans, will be held at Lincoln Terrace Park from 12pm to 7pm, featuring live performances, lectures, workshops and giveaways, according to a press release.

Black VegFest proudly advocates for veganism while supporting those who are preparing for or are unsure about adopting a vegan way of life, the press release said. There will be vendors offering vegan food, merchandise, information and services.

There are many reasons why Black VegFest is held in Brooklyn, said Nadia Muyeeb-Adewale, the co-founder of the festival. Her husband, Omowale Adewale is a Crown Heights native, and he wanted to provide the community free access to life changing information and resources about food, liberation and more, she said.

"Collectively, we want our community to have a greater understanding of the food system and how we have the power to change it," she said. "That can start with our plates."

Muyeeb-Adewale said one of the reasons why heart disease has been been the number one killer in America is the dissemination of false information and lack of control of what comes in to our community. Controlling what we eat and supporting Black farmers is one step to take to control our health and nutrition, she said.
