There's an election on Tuesday, Nov. 5; Don't Forget to Vote!

A general election will be held in New York City for municipal and state judgeships and the public advocate

There is a general election in New York City, Tuesday, November 5. In Kings County, elections will be held for the Public Advocate seat, the city court, surrogate court, and supreme court.

Don't forget to vote!

New York City Public Advocate

There will be a special election for the public advocate seat, currently held by Jumaane Williams who won in a special election when the post was vacated by Tish James in December 2018. A second election for New York City Public Advocate will be held for the remainder of the four-year term through December 31, 2021.

The candidates for public advocate include:

New York City Civil Court

In Kings County, the candidates for New York City Civil Court include: D. Bernadette Neckles (D) and Vincent F. Martusciello (R).

Kings County Surrogate Court

For the Surrogate Court, Margarita Lopez Torres (D), is running unopposed.

New York Supreme Court

For the New York Supreme Court 2nd Judicial District, five seats need to be chosen:

Note: There have been a few changes in the election process in New York in the past year: In January 2019, the New York State Legislature consolidated local, state, and federal primary dates. The law went into effect during the 2019 election cycle and changed the statewide primary date to June instead of September.

To vote in New York, you must be a U. S.  citizen who will be 18 years old by the date of the next election. Also, a voter must have been a resident of his or her state county, city, or village for at least 30 days prior to the election. A voter can request a registration application in person at the county board of election or any New York state agency-based voter registration center. Forms are also available by mail, by telephone, or online.

There also is a race for the 45th City Council representative. The 45th District  includes the neighborhoods of includes Flatbush, East Flatbush, and parts of Midwood, Marine Park, Flatlands and Kensington. The incumbent Farah Louis (D), is running for re-election. Her two opponents are Anthony Beckford, running on the Liberal party line, and David Fite, a Libertarian. .
