So once again the weekend is upon us, imploring us to get a life! Do not get impeached for obstruction of good times and perhaps have a congressional investigation of why you never know what's happening in your town. We can all use a bit of social direction and not just from that friend that only goes to trap parties. Using the weekend wisely is always wise and why you wouldn't do that in the first place is beyond me. It's the only time when you don't hate everybody in eyesight; be it on your commute, while at work or in line at Starbucks, waiting to get your double mocha whatever.
Take your mundane activities and shove it. Take your netflix account and shove it. Take your butt out of the house and enjoy your free time in the bestest borough on earth, and while you're at it, maybe link up with a new group of friends. Broaden your circle a bit and find folks that share your interests. And whatever you do, please wear some deodorant; nobody likes your smelly pits, especially if you hit up a a hot and humid trap party!
Lost Wons, Brooklyn Night Bazaar, 150 Greenpoint Avenue, Friday, 9pm-2pm, free (Greenpoint)
This is my party that I do with DJ Fritzo (Fritz Celestine): every third Friday of the month we play the music of artist gone too soon, but who left us dope jams! Think Biggie, Tupac, Michael Jackson, Prince, Aaliyah, Rick James, Amy Winehouse, Marvin Gaye and, unfortunately, the list goes on and on. We're downstairs in the cellar lounge where you can also play glow in the dark mini-golf, do karaoke in private rooms, or go upstairs for billiards, ping-pong and a vendors market. Or have some dinner at Black Star restaurant, who apparently make bomb a#$ chicken.
Arts In Bushwick Community Day, House Of Yes, 2 Wyckoff Avenue, Saturday, 12pm-8pm, free (Bushwick)
You probably know AIB from Bushwick Open Studios that they do. Previously, it was in the summer, but two years ago it moved to the fall, which I completely don't understand. But AIB also does things year 'round and this is one such event. It's for all ages and kid friendly, a great time to bring out the little rug rats to paint their face, see magic and maybe a clown that isn't in the White House. It's free so you should go. Click here for the Facebook page.
Atlantis: Mermaid Parade After Party, House Of Yes, 2 Wyckoff Avenue, Saturday. 9pm ($0-$25)
If you can't make it to the Mermaid Parade because you're not into the sun, the beach, outrageous costumes and scantily clad people, which probably means that your a Mormon, then maybe you'll change your mind when the sun goes down. If you can't bear to take off your costume after the parade, swim on over to House Of Yes for the afterparty. It's gonna be quite the affair, so click here to get all the deets from their Facebook page.
Juneteenth Celebration, Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street, Saturday, 12pm-8pm, Freee (Bed Stuy)
Juneteenth is the celebration of the emancipation of slavery and if it there's ever been a reason to celebrate with dancing, live music performances, art and enjoying the outdoors - this would be it! It's a lot going on here, so click this link for more information.
"THE CHAMP" My Year With Muhammad Ali, Richard Beavers Gallery, 406 Marcus Garvey Boulevard, Saturday, 6pm-9pm, free (Bed Stuy)
The inimitable Muhammad Ali passed away last year, and as befitting such a iconic figure, there is a photo exhibition of images taken of the champ by photographer Michael Gaffney. The exhibited photos are taken from the book just recently published, and Mr. Gaffney will be on hand signing copies and regaling folks with stories of "The Greatest". Click here for the Facebook event page and reserve a spot at the opening this Saturday.
Str8 West Coastin', Project Parlor, 742 Myrtle Avenue, Saturday, 2pm-9pm, free (Bed Stuy)
This is a fun party that celebrates the music of the left coast. You can chill out in the backyard with your people, listen to dope jams and even enjoy complimentary Bud aluminums from 2pm-4pm 'til it runs out! In other words: get there early, foolio! If you know Project Parlor, then you know the party really jumps in there and especially during the summer when the backyard is on tilt! If you don't know, then go and find out!
10 Annual Red Hook Jazz Festival, 19 President Street, Sunday, 1pm-6pm, $10 (Red Hook...duh)
Jazz is quintessential American music and you should embrace it. It's engaging, beautiful, emotional and you need it in your life. You don't always have to turn up my friend, so head over to Red Hook this Sunday and get some culture in your earhole! It's a fine lineup of artists, including 40Twenty and Matt Lavelle and the 12 Houses Orchestra. Click here for the full lineup.
Now mark your calendars and hit the streets before you get impeached for not having a life!
