The 9th annual Make Music New York music festival is on its way!!
On Sunday, June 21, rock bands, church bands, jazz bands; gospel singers, opera singers, soul singers, all genres of music performers from around the city will take to the streets, ushering in the first day of summer with 1,200 free outdoor concerts on street corners, in community gardens and in parks.
The festival, which began in France in 1982 as Make Music Day, has since spread to 120 countries and is celebrated in 20 cities across the United States.
Yamaha will sponsor roving piano performances from the back of pickup trucks in New York, Chicago and Seattle.New events at the festival this year include:
A new series Exquisite Corpses will liven up six NYC burial grounds with improvised music. New York artists will perform at locations including Grant's Tomb, the Marble Cemetery, St Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery, Trinity Church Cemetery and Madison Square Park (which used to be a potter's field.)
Pop Up Musicals will feature numbers and medley from NYC-centric musical all around Manhattan. A U-Haul will make its way through the city, letting out performers to hit an audience with a flash musical theater performance before loading up and moving on to the next location. (Talk about On The Town.)
Also new this year, the Sousapalooza will pack Bryant Park with 200 wind band musicians to perform classic marches including a new Guerrilla Fanfare by composer Kevin James. Definitely not a parade you want to pass you by.
