On Saturday, November 19, Richard Beavers, founder and owner of Richard Beavers Gallery (formerly House of Art Gallery) celebrated his birthday and the 9th anniversary of his gallery's opening with a party and performance at the gallery.
The evening was produced by Richard Beavers and Tai Allen (of Tap+Cork).
Established in 2007, Richard Beavers Gallery, located at 408 Marcus Garvey Blvd. in Bed-Stuy, is a contemporary fine art gallery that markets, promotes and sells the work of urban contemporary artists.
Beavers is known for curating some of the best artistic talent out of Central Brooklyn whose work depicts the various aspects of every day life in an inner city environment, often resonating themes of change, resistance and cultural pride. Some of the artists featured at the gallery include Bisa Butler, Charlotta Janssen, Frank Morrison and Jamel Shabazz, to name a few.
Check out this photo gallery of the event, featuring a "live mix tape" poetry and music performance by The Originals (feat. Tai Allen and Dasan Ahanu) who paid homage to the music of Gil Scott-Heron and Oscar Brown, Jr., followed by an intimate, live interview of Beavers by BK Reader founder and publisher C. Zawadi Morris.
The "best of Bed-Stuy" was in the house excited to congratulate Beavers on the continued success of the art gallery-- a neighborhood gem and what is surely becoming a veritable institution in Bed-Stuy.
