If you haven't been checking out B-Side, the Thursday night, live music series down at BRIC House, which is located at 647 Fulton Street, in the downtown part of Fort Greene, then you're playing yourself. It's high quality, live music performances, in a very intimate, studio setting, that features some of the best singers, rappers and musicians that Brooklyn has to offer. And when the studio is full, you can sit in the stoop, the huge public gathering space in BRIC House, that features a ridiculously large, drop down screen, stadium seating, and there's also Hungry Ghost, where you can buy coffee/tea/soda, sandwiches or an adult beverage. And it's $Free to see the show.
This week, Thursday, March 19th, at 7:30pm, B-Side will feature the singer Melanie Charles live in studio and the show will be hosted by Sabine Blaizin. A talented singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Melanie's a Bushwick Brooklyn raised, daughter of Haitian immigrants, who started singing at an early age. She graduated from LaGuardia Performing Arts High School in Manhattan, where she studied the flute, and then attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where she studied vocal Jazz performance.
Channeling the energy and roots of the people and island of her parents home, while also harnessing the culture and experiences that comes from being born and raised in NYC and in particular, the borough of Brooklyn, Melanie delivers many flavors in her music. She's toured the world with a variety of productions, gracing stages from Milan to Japan, and has worked on two albums with world renowned producer/guitarist Nicola Conte. And it's not just Jazz music, as she's an important voice in the Haitian Root music scene, being featured in books and sharing billing with an important list of Haitian Roots artists, including James Germain, Belo, Buyu Ambroise and Emeline Michel.
Her new band is called "People's Champ", who combine Rock/Afrobeat/dance, for an upbeat dance experience, full of energy and fun and she also has an alterego-D'Flower-from a band called Rat Habitat. So with all those various flavors, what can you expect from Melanie Charles' B-Side performance? I have no idea, but I suggest you go check it out, as I'm sure it will be nothing short of amazing.
