Saudades, a brand new play created by and about Brazilian immigrants, will be showing at the Brooklyn performing arts theater JACK on June 23rd and 24th.

The play tells the story of a young Brazilian-American woman named Laura who goes on a self-discovery trip to Brazil, in an effort to track down her long-lost mother — whom Laura originally thought had passed when she was a child.

Along her journey, Laura befriends a young Brazilian man named Pedro, who attends college in the U.S. and holds extremely negative views towards his home country.

Paralleling Laura's expedition is another storyline — told through flashbacks — about a Brazilian women named Luiza, who, after six years of living in the U.S. in an unhappy marriage while raising a child, makes the decision to go back to Brazil to explore a new love, leaving her family behind in the process.

The term saudades is an untranslatable Portuguese word that means "the love that remains after someone or something is gone", giving audiences a hint at what's to come when they experience the show.

The intention of the play is to represent nuanced and varied perspectives of Brazilian immigrants in America, bringing the underrepresented community to the forefront and exposing some of its main emotional struggles, according to a release.

Saudades is written by Fernando Segall, directed by Marina Zurita, and produced by Et Alia Theater — a NYC-based thater company that is founded and led by international women. It stars talented performers Ana Moioli, Julia Burnier, Dylan Jernet, Gonçalo Ruivo and Davon Howard.

The show is suitable for audiences of all ages, and has a runtime of one hour and thirty minutes.

Tickets for the play are $20 apiece, and can be purchased online here.
