This August, AFROPUNK is teaming up with BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn, to present AFROPUNK BLKTOPIA BKLYN, headlined by Erykah Badu.
What is AFROPUNK? Originating with the 2003 documentary that highlighted a Black presence in the American punk scene, AFROPUNK is a platform for the alternative and experimental. Remaining at the core of its mission are the punk principles of DIY aesthetics, radical thought and social non-conformity. AFROPUNK is a voice for the unwritten, unwelcome and unheard-of.
Badu last played the AFROPUNK stage in 2018 and her return is eagerly anticipated as AFROPUNK approaches its 20th anniversary in 2025, according to a news release and flyers.
The two-day festival will take place on August 23 and 24 at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park, featuring Badulla Oblongata, Sara Bellum and Analogue Girl in a Digital World, with more lineup announcements coming soon.
AFROPUNK continues its tradition of celebrating the rich diversity of the Black diaspora, redefining modern cultural experiences, and providing a vibrant space for life, music, food, and culture. This year’s festival, themed “a celebration of the future of Black life, creativity, community and expression reimagined,” promises to be a dynamic and inclusive event.
