The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) issued a request for proposals (RFP) to commission a Brooklyn-based artist or artist collective for a public art installation along Flushing Avenue, spanning Clermont Avenue to Carlton Avenue.

The selected work will be displayed from May to November 2025, offering thousands of residents and visitors a chance to engage with art that celebrates the borough's culture and history, according to a press release.

The RFP invites artists to respond to the theme “Our Brooklyn”, encouraging proposals that explore the intersection of economic growth, culture and community. Submissions should highlight the richness of Brooklyn’s diversity, its legacy of innovation, and the ways communities unite through work, social and cultural life.

The project also seeks to incorporate the Navy Yard’s 200-year history as a hub of industry and creativity and Building 92 and its surrounding areas as extensions of the primary artwork, such as its fence line or forecourt, while reflecting contemporary Brooklyn.

"As a cornerstone of the great borough of Brooklyn, we dedicate this public RFP to underscoring how economic growth, culture, and community are all intertwined in our everyday lives,” said Shanny Spraus-Reinhardt, executive vice president and chief impact officer of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation. “Public art has always worked to spearhead important conversations and inspire necessary movements. We welcome submissions that serve to keep the dialogue focused on progress, pride, and a celebration of Brooklyn.”

Eligible applicants include artists currently residing in Kings County or working with a Navy Yard-based business. Group submissions are allowed, provided all members reside in Brooklyn. Former residents and workers are not eligible.

The winning project will also feature in three public programs, including an opening reception in May 2025.

Interested artists must submit their proposals by Friday, Dec.15, 2024. An informational session for potential applicants will be held on-site and virtually on Tuesday, Dec.3, 2024. Full details on submission requirements and selection criteria are available here.
