Applications are open for the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music's third annual Jazz Leaders Fellowship program. JLF provides Black women and Black non-binary jazz musicians with resources to develop their craft. The program aims to broaden the presence of BKCM within the jazz community and to introduce students to diverse and talented teachers.
“From the beginning of the Fellowship, I’ve been warmly welcomed into the BKCM community. I got to teach workshops, collaborate with BKCM staff, and even got to learn to play some trumpet. Coming out of the pandemic, it’s been wonderful to meet new people, grow, and gain access to resources to develop my musical career. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity,” 2022-2023 Jazz Leaders Fellowship recipient Jasmine Wilson said.
Each selected fellow receives a $12,500 award. BKCM also provides recipients with teaching and performance opportunities that support them on their paths toward music leadership. Fellows will have access to rehearsal space at BKCM's beautiful historic building, and being a fellow qualifies them to participate in BKCM's Jazz Program advisory panel, among other opportunities.
BKCM welcomes Black women or Black non-binary jazz musicians (instrumental and vocal) 21 years and over in the New York Metro area to apply for this career-changing opportunity. Applicants at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply; however, full-time students are not eligible.
Applications are accepted from Wednesday, March 15, through Monday, May 15. The winning fellows will be announced in June. The application can be found on bkcm.org/jlf.
