A pair of Brooklyn-based subway performers have been selected as finalists for the first-ever Riders’ Choice Award.
The Riders’ Choice Award is a newly-launched competition that gives New Yorkers the opportunity to vote for a variety of musical acts that can be found performing throughout New York City’s subway system.
Each of the three selected finalists for the award have all been selected as part of the new cohort in the MTA Music Under New York program. The program, presented by MTA Arts & Design, features over 350 musical artists that perform at around 40 different NYC transit locations over the course of the year.
The musical acts representing Brooklyn as finalists in the inaugural competition are Afro Dominicano and Brass Queens.
Afro Dominicano is a Latin fusion band that blends traditional Dominican folkloric roots music with Afro-Caribbean soul. The group is known for their high-energy riffs and romantic balladry.
Brass Queens is an all-female brass band that is renowned for their high-energy performances and their mission to empower women through music.
The two Brooklyn bands — along with musical artist Augie Bello — were all announced as finalists during a Riders’ Choice Award launch event in Times Square. All three acts also performed live at the kickoff event.
Also in-attendance at the event was NYC Mayor Eric Adams, along with representatives of the MTA, Partnership for New York City, Riders Alliance, and others.
“The talent of these performers is helping to draw New Yorkers back to the subways in ever greater numbers,” said Kathryn Wylde, president and CEO of Partnership for New York City.
“We are delighted to celebrate the contributions of the intrepid musicians who show their love for their city by bringing joy to the transit system. We look forward to seeing who ultimately takes home the Riders’ Choice Award on July 27.”
The Riders’ Choice Award is the latest project developed and facilitated by WE❤️NYC, a new campaign funded by the members of the Partnership for New York City. The campaign aims to encourage New Yorkers to show their love for their city through civic action and community engagement.
New Yorkers have until the end of the day on July 26 to cast their votes, with the winner ultimately being announced on July 27.
