The Canarsie Educational Campus received $250,000 in funding to upgrade its lighting system from state Senator Roxanne J. Persaud.

Persaud presented the check to administrators of the Canarsie Educational Campus on behalf of the New York State Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology Program (CREST), during the Canarsie vs. Lincoln varsity football game at the school’s sports field on 1600 Rockaway Pkwy. on Sept. 16, according to a press release.

The upgrade will improve visibility and safety during competitive sports and other events at the institution, the press release said.

“This significant investment in our community reflects our commitment to enhancing facilities that support the athletic and academic success of our students,” said Persaud. “The upgraded lighting will improve the safety and quality of field events and provide more opportunities for students to excel in sports.”

Principal Adaleza J. Michelena said the upgrade will benefit the school and its surrounding community.

"Everyone - students, staff, families, and especially our players - at the Canarsie Campus is excited to have these stadium lights," she said. "The lights elevate the quality of the field and allow us to see its beauty at night and increase visibility and safety for all our players and the Canarsie community. We are very thankful to Senator Persaud for her continued support of the community, and we hope to see her at many home games."
