New York State Senate Passes Ramadan Resolution From Southern Brooklyn's Iwen Chu

The resolution was introduced by New York State Senators Iwen Chu and Kevin Thomas.

This week, the New York State Senate unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the importance of Ramadan.

The newly-adopted resolution will observe and celebrate Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, in the state of New York between March 23, 2023 to April 21, 2023.

The resolution was introduced to the Senate by State Sens. Iwen Chu and Kevin Thomas.

“I am proud to introduce this Resolution commemorating Ramadan as the holy month comes to a close and send our warm wishes to the Muslim community of the State of New York.” said Thomas.

“During this time of self-reflection, we must come together to embrace the spirit of community and unity and highlight the rich cultural heritage and diversity of our neighbors.”

For more than a billion Muslims worldwide, Ramadan is the most significant time of the year. Throughout the month, the community participates in a daily period of fasting, nightly prayers at a mosque, charitable giving, as well as reading from the Quran, according to a release.

Senator Chu represents many of the Muslim communities in neighborhoods such as Bay Ridge, Kensington, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach.

“It's an honor to introduce this Resolution commemorating Ramadan and wishing Muslim communities Eid Mubarak! I am proud to represent the diverse Muslim communities from Kensington, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach. Ramadan is a time of reflection, worship, and charity. These vibrant communities come from many different countries and speak many diverse languages and dialects. It really shows the beautiful diversity that makes New York City so special. Bay Ridge is home to the largest Middle eastern/Muslim community.” said Chu.

“Many in the Muslim community have dedicated much of this month to giving back through food drives and community events. I hope this Ramadan brought peace and may your prayers be accepted. Eid Mubarak!"
