A brand new borough-wide public elementary school is coming to Boerum Hill for the next school year.
Located at the new mixed-use development at 489 State Street, P.S. 456 will feature an elevated outdoor play space, arts room, gym, auditorium and music room.
The first of many open houses will begin on Wednesday.
The school will focus on project-based learning and Spanish-English dual language education. The elementary school will be in a collaborative partnership with the Brooklyn New School (BNS). This includes the sharing of resources to build capacity in staff with on-going professional development.
The elementary school described their interdisciplinary approach in their brochure as "ensuring that children can read, write, solve complex mathematical reasoning problems, apply their knowledge across contexts, swim, bike, be independent, ask questions, know themselves as learners, grow vegetables and cook with them, and get what they need as humans in an ever-changing world."
P.S. 456 will accept borough-wide admissions, including District 13 and 15. Admissions will prioritize low income families, with 50% of seats set aside for those who qualify. School capacity is 500 students and the Department of Education plans to open with at least 1 Pre-K class and 3 Kindergarten classes.
