NYC Mayor Eric Adams wants to revive the issuance of Section 8 housing vouchers to alleviate homelessness, according to the Gothamist.
The news organization reported that Adams briefly mentioned issuing 1,000 monthly vouchers in last week's State of the City Address without divulging many details about it. The publication reported that the New York City Housing Authority, which issued most of the 100,000 vouchers currently benefiting the city's residents, would issue more vouchers later in the year.
Spokesperson Michael Horgan said the authority would prioritize the homeless, victims of domestic violence and people with disabilities, among other vulnerable groups.
"As the largest landlord in New York City, NYCHA understands firsthand the importance of affordable housing and the need to use every available tool to connect more families with decent, safe and sanitary places to call home," said Horgan.
This would be the first time the city issued the vouchers since the Bloomberg administration.
The affordable housing voucher does not expire as long as beneficiaries remain eligible based on their income, just below $50,000 a year for an individual and $70,600 for a family of four. Beneficiaries pay 30% or less of their income on rent while the city covers the balance up to a "fair market" threshold.
