Maya Kornberg, a political scientist and professor, on Tuesday announced her candidacy for City Council in Brooklyn’s 39th District ahead of the Democratic primary election on June 2025.

Kornberg said she wanted to strengthen local governance during president-elect Donald Trump's term in office, according to a press release.

“With the Trump Presidency looming, local governance is more important than ever, and the City Council is our best line of defense to push back against extremism and protect our values,” Kornberg said. “It is time to come together and focus on building consensus and driving pragmatic progressive change in New York City – and that’s exactly what I’ll do as a Council Member.”

Her vision includes ensuring a safer, greener and more affordable district. She said she is also passionate about expanding access to affordable childcare, housing, public schools and reliable transportation, and also said she has a zero-tolerance approach to hate.

The 39th District encompasses Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Kensington, Borough Park, Gowanus, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill and the Columbia Waterfront. The current City Council Member for this district is Shahana Hanif.
