The MTA said it is thinking about temporarily halting train operations on the G subway line this summer to modernize the signal system.
Although the upgrades are much-needed, temporarily suspending subway services means residents will commute via shuttle buses from the end of June through early September, according to Greenpointers.
The agency announced its proposal in a press briefing last Friday.
From June 28 to July 5, the MTA will suspend G service between Court Square and Greenpoint Avenue stations. Between July 5 and August 12, the agency will suspend service between Court Square and Bedford-Nostrand Avenue stations. And from August 12 to September 2, the MTA will provide shuttle bus service between Bedford-Nostrand and Hoyt-Schermerhorn.
The upgrades, aimed at improving service efficiency and reliability, follow the approval of a $368 million contract by the MTA last month. City Council Member Lincoln Restler urged the agency to consider an alternative approach that will not lead to a complete halt of operations. He lamented the impact on local businesses.
"While the planned signal improvements are vital infrastructure investment, a full shutdown of the G train in Greenpoint for six weeks would cause unnecessary harm and disruption to our community," he said. "I'm urging the MTA to act nimbly and find alternative construction approaches."
