The Clarendon Library in Flatbush reopened on Monday ahead of schedule, after an extensive renovation that had left many residents without a local library.

New York City Council Member Farah N. Louis joined the Brooklyn Public Library and other stakeholders for the official reopening ceremony, according to a press release.

Louis attributed the speedy renovation to collaboration with the Brooklyn Public Library and the NYC Department of Design and Construction. She said the library was a "lifeline for literacy programs, educational workshops, and a safe space for growth."

"Today is a momentous occasion for the residents of Flatbush and East Flatbush as we celebrate the reopening of the Clarendon Library—a cherished institution that has stood as a pillar of our community for over 100 years. After months of tireless advocacy and collaboration, we are thrilled to see this vital resource back in service months ahead of schedule," said Louis.

The newly renovated facility boasts a new HVAC and fire alarm system, new furniture, updated information desk and checkout area. The building’s exterior was also upgraded with new seating, planting beds, lighting, power and a custom wood book drop, allowing patrons to return books at any time of day.
