More than two dozen New York City council members on Wednesday called on the state Board of Elections to exclude Donald J. Trump’s name from the state’s 2024 presidential primary and general election ballots.
The letter, signed by 29 council members, includes Brooklyn representatives Justin Brannan, Sandy Nurse, Crystal Hudson, Shahana Hanif, Lincoln Restler, Jennifer Gutiérrez, Alexa Avilés, Chi Ossé, Rita Joseph and Mercedes Narcisse.
The council members highlight Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. The letter states that Trump should be disqualified from public office "because he engaged in and aided an insurrection against the United States after swearing to uphold the Constitution as the nation’s president."
This motion follows similar efforts throughout the country. So far, 33 states have seen formal challenges to the former president, according to The New York Times. Two states, Colorado and Maine, have blocked the former president from appearing on the ballot. The record from the Colorado trial sites evidence that Trump “did not merely incite the insurrection,” but “continued to support it” with “overt, voluntary, and direct participation,” during of the January 6 attack against the U.S. Capitol.
