Brooklyn Councilman Justin Brannan, who represents Bay Ridge, Coney Island and other south Brooklyn neighborhoods, launched a campaign to run for city comptroller in 2025.

"With my friend Brad [Lander] now running for mayor, today I'm excited to announce I've filed to run for NYC Comptroller," Brannan said on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Take this first step with me, and together we can make sure New York City starts putting its money where its mouth is!"

Brannan is currently the chair of the City Council's Committee on Finance, and will be term-limited out of his position next year. The current city comptroller, Brad Lander, said he will run against Mayor Eric Adams during the Democratic primary next year.

Brannan has a website up as of Wednesday morning, asking for donations for his run. It is sponsored by JB For NYC, a political committee.

"New Yorkers work their tails off and pay plenty of taxes. They deserve to see a tangible return on their investment," the statement on the website reads. "We can fully fund CUNY & universal child care. We can give our EMS workers pay parity. We can keep our streets clean and our libraries open. And we can make sure nobody goes to bed hungry or gets left behind."

Queens Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar and Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine have also expressed interest in running for the city comptroller seat.
