Affordable Housing Lottery in Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, Senior Units in Flatbush Now Open

The Hartby on Willoughby Avenue is giving tenants $1,000 that can be applied for moving costs or the security deposit.

There are several affordable housing lotteries that opened up recently, including one in a historic Bedford Stuyvesant building and a seniors-only housing complex in Flatbush. 

The Hartby, at 788 Willoughby Avenue, has 62 affordable units, including studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments. Rent starts at $2,495 and go up to $3,939. Those who are selected will get one month of free rent, as well as $1,000 that could go towards moving costs or to pay for the security deposit. 

The building, which was once part of what is now known as St. John's University, was built in 1872 and has arched windows, high ceilings and an interior courtyard. Amenities include an attended lobby, gym, business center, party room, dog park and washing station, a rooftop terrace, bike storage, commercial laundry room, on-site parking and electric car charging stations.

The lottery for the Hartby ends on October 14. 

There will be 39 affordable units available at Bethany Senior Terraces, located at 604 E. 40th St. in Flatbush. There will be studios and one-bedrooms available, and at least one person in the household must be over the age of 62.

The tenant will pay 30% of their income for rent and applicants will need to qualify for Section 8.

The application period for this lottery ends on October 23.

There are 165 units available at the Ebenezer Plaza Phase II, a newly constructed residential project located in Brownsville. The building complex includes a gym, bike room, outdoor space and a community room. The units come with electric stoves and tenants are responsible for paying their own electric bill. 

The rent for the studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments start at $454 and go up to $2,949. The lottery for this residential complex, located at 598 Christopher Ave., closes on October 3.
