A plan to replace a total of 335 elevators throughout 20 New York City Housing Authority developments — including 247 elevators at 11 Brooklyn developments — has been announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams and NYCHA CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt.
The plan is a part of a $300 million state funding agreement between NYCHA and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York to provide much-needed repairs to developments located throughout the five boroughs.
The reason for the replacement elevator installations is because NYCHA's elevators are considered too old. According to a release, the healthy lifespan for an elevator on a multifamily residential property is 15 to 20 years, while the oldest NYCHA development elevator on record has been in use for 32 years now.
The project will provide improved elevator service to almost 34,000 NYC residents living in around 16,000 apartments. This includes 78,000 residents over the age of 62, along with 31,000 mobility-impaired residents, according to a release.
"Every day, NYCHA residents experience the consequences of decades of underinvestment and tens of billions of dollars in capital needs. Providing them the quality of life that every New Yorker deserves requires creativity and partnership — and this agreement represents both," said Mayor Adams.
"With the Public Housing Preservation Trust, the PACT program, and programs like this, we are giving residents a true menu of options to get the repairs they need in their homes in the way they prefer. I want to thank all of our partners in Albany for their investment in NYCHA, and I look forward to getting this work done to help 34,000 New Yorkers avoid dangerous broken elevators."
Among the Brooklyn developments that will be receiving replacement elevators includes Marcy, Marlboro, Tilden, Nostrand and more.
The timeline for the respective elevator replacement work for each development will range between 49 to 81 months to complete. All elevator work is expected to be fully finished by December 2028.
