The nonprofit group Arts Gowanus will provide information about how to apply for subsidized artist studio spaces and a fellowship program at a Gowanus Oversight Task Force meeting on Thursday.
There will be roughly 120 subsidized studio spaces across 11 development sites in Gowanus, the first to open will be at The Shop, a coworking space at 420 Carroll St., this spring. The lottery application is now live, and the first drawing will take place in early April, according to a press release.

The studios will be available because of a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) that was negotiated by Arts Gowanus ahead of the Gowanus rezoning.
“Affordability and access to workspace remains one of the biggest challenges facing working artists today,” says Arts Gowanus Executive Director Johnny Thornton. “We’re proud to provide multiple avenues for artists to acquire a sustainable place where they can create.”
The nonprofit will also discuss the simultaneous launch of two fellowships. Low-income Gowanus and Red Hook-based artists are invited to apply for the Arts Gowanus Artist Fellowship Program, which offers free studio space, material support and career development for one year. More information about the Arts Gowanus Artist Fellowship Program, as well as the application, can be found here.
The Gowanus Oversight Task Force meeting will be held on Thursday, March 27 at P.S. 133 (610 Baltic St.) from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. A recording of the meeting will be posted on the Task Force website promptly after the meeting. The meeting will also feature presentations from the Department of Housing and Preservation.
