More than 185 women from the Farragut Houses gathered at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on March 15 for the Second Annual Women’s Herstory Month Luncheon, “A Brooklyn Girl Vibe.”
The luncheon is one of several initiatives led by the Farragut Stakeholders, which also runs a basketball and mentoring program for youth and a health and fitness program for adults.
Legendary singer and actress Cheryl Pepsii Riley was one of the attendees, according to a press release. She performed alongside her band, Hot Chocolate, before joining radio personality Angela Yee in a candid discussion about life, success, and the essence of being a Brooklyn woman.

“My band and I had such a wonderful time celebrating Brooklyn Girl Vibes! I’m honored to have been invited to fellowship with all the fierce and fabulous women of Farragut Houses!" said Riley. "And to share this platform with the radio legend, Angela Yee, awesome! It was indeed, just a couple of Brooklyn girls vibin’ I pray we were able to inspire and encourage everyone to trust their God given gifts! For that, coupled with our Brooklyn swag, is what makes us magic!”
The event was produced and catered by Bonello Productions, with support from partners including Barclays Center, Brooklyn Navy Yard, LoriLu Consulting, Brooklyn Org, and Angela Yee’s company, Coffee Uplifts People.
Local entrepreneurs from Farragut Houses—Nijah Newsom of Margie’s Kitchen, Shakima Brown of KeKe The Foodie, Aja Whitaker of Cup Caja, and DJ Madam Maj were also involved.
Brooklyn Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon and Judge Sharon Hudson addressed attendees, emphasizing the importance of community-driven initiatives.
Attendees praised the event for its buoyant atmosphere.
“Not only was it a beautiful event it was also uplifting," said Debra McBeth, a Farragut Stakeholders member. "Cheryl Pepsii Riley spoke about her experiences and challenges she faced to become successful. It was very encouraging for the many women who attended the event.”
