Brooklyn’s Little Caribbean was awarded the prestigious 2024 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award by the Preservation League of New York State.
The recognition celebrates Little Caribbean’s efforts to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of one of New York’s largest Caribbean and West Indian communities, according to a press release.
The award, which highlights exemplary historic preservation work across the state, will be presented during a public reception in New York City on Friday, Nov. 15.
Since its inception in 2017, Little Caribbean has been a hub for cultural heritage, commerce, and community engagement in Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood. The I AM CARIBBEING initiative, led by founder Shelley Worrell, has played a pivotal role in raising awareness of Caribbean culture through events, public programs, and partnerships with local organizations, the press release said.
"We are truly humbled and grateful to receive the Preservation League’s Excellence Award,” said Worrell. “This recognition is a testament to the power of Little Caribbean and the importance of preserving our heritage."
Little Caribbean preserves our community's heritage while sustaining it for the future, said state Senator Zellnor Myrie.
"I am so proud to represent one of New York's largest concentrations of Caribbean and West Indian residents and extend my sincere congratulations to Little Caribbean for this well-deserved recognition," he added.
