Nonprofit organization AARP New York recently honored Dr. Tim Law, a Brooklyn resident, with its 2023 Andrus Award for Community Service.

The award — handed out each year by AARP — commemorates individuals that enrich their respective communities and inspire others to engage in volunteerism, as aligned with the nonprofit’s mission.

Law, who immigrated to America in 1968, has worked as an educator and administrator for the New York City Department of Education for over three decades.

During his time living in Brooklyn, Law established the Chinese American Social Services Center (CASS) in Bensonhurst and engaged in countless volunteer work over the years, according to AARP.

Among Law’s list of volunteer efforts include organizing voter registration drives, participating in food giveaways, providing complimentary translation services, as well as hosting round-table discussions with city officials regarding issues related to immigration.

According to AARP, Law has faced plenty of adversity along the way, enduring various challenges and racism on account of his background and circumstances.

Despite the hardships, AARP says that Law has been able to overcome those issues to successfully help underprivileged individuals and other immigrants like himself, which the organization adds is a testament to the Brooklyn resident’s drive and commitment.
