The New York Community Trust and Robin Hood Foundation have created The Funds for the Newest New Yorkers, a coordinated effort to support the unprecedented arrival of over 200,000 migrants and asylum seekers to New York City since spring 2022.

This initiative will foster collaboration across government, business, philanthropy and nonprofits to build a sustainable infrastructure that optimizes social service delivery for our city's newest residents, according to a press release.

The advisory board includes representatives from the offices of the mayor, comptroller and governor, as well as key philanthropic organizations such as UJA Federation and Ford Foundation.

The funds aim to support new arrivals by facilitating their economic inclusion and mobility while enhancing the city’s social service infrastructure. At least $4 million will be administered to nonprofits through an open RFP process, with applications closing on September 16, 2024.

What this means for Brooklyn is an increased capacity for nonprofits to provide essential legal support; funding for navigators to assist residents in shelters, connecting them with vital services; community groups will receive funds for education, job training, English classes, and childcare, among other services; and resources will enhance nonprofit infrastructure, improving collaboration with government agencies and other organizations.

Nonprofits in Brooklyn are encouraged to submit proposals to The Funds for the Newest New Yorkers by September 16, 2024. More details and the application can be found here.
