The Healthy Start Brooklyn Community Action Network offers free Zumba classes every Tuesday and Thursday at the Bedford Neighborhood Health Action Center.
Dance yourself into shape with free Zumba classes in Bedford Stuyvesant offered by the Healthy Start Brooklyn Community Action Network (CAN).
Zumba, a fitness craze that has gained a worldwide cult following, is an exercise fitness program which includes dance and aerobic movements as well as squats and lunges. Set to mostly Latin music with choreographed songs, this fitness trend puts the emphasis on having fun while burning calories. Created in the 1990s by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez, it is taken today by 15 million people at 200,000 locations in more than 180 countries every week.
And the benefits speak for themselves:
- Zumba classes provide a large calorie burn through aerobic activity. The average person can burn around 600 to 1,000 calories in a Zumba class. The classes are choreographed to provide intervals of intensity in both pace of music and type of movements to maximize their fat-burning benefits.
- Zumba is a full body workout. Aside from its heart-healthy benefits, it builds endurance quickly while providing a workout for the whole body. From head and shoulder rolls that loosen up the neck and warm up the upper body, to footwork that strengthens and stretches calves and ankles, this fitness method touches on nearly every muscle and joint.
- It improves and maintains coordination which is extremely important as we grow older.
- Zumba increases confidence, boosts the mood and improves posture. It is also the perfect workout to get rid of stress: Zumba's upbeat moves release a ton of mood-improving endorphins.
Until the end of September, CAN offers now free Zumba classes every Tuesday and Thursday at the Bedford Neighborhood Health Action Center. All you need is comfortable clothes and a pair of sneakers. Let's get to moving!
