A new skateboard park is in the works for Mount Prospect Park near Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn.
Referred to as the “Brooklyn Skate Garden,” the project is part of a recent partnership between the city and the Skatepark Project — formerly known as the Tony Hawk Foundation — to establish and upgrade skateparks across Brooklyn and the Bronx, according to New York City Council Member Crystal Hudson.
The project came about because central Brooklyn has insufficient spaces to skate, prompting skaters to utilize unsuitable public areas as a result, Hudson said through a release. She does not expect the addition of the skatepark to negatively impact Mount Prospect Park or its users, but rather, will enhance the public park experience for all.
“This project will not result in the demolition of Mount Prospect Park,” Hudson said. “Rather, it will bring a much-needed revitalization of the park that will keep a majority of the existing open space completely untouched and available for use — even during construction — for community events, pick-up soccer games, dog walking, and all the myriad activities for which our neighbors currently use the park.”
The proposed design of the 40,000-square-foot park will include a custom, poured-in-place concrete skatepark that offers security lighting, new park amenities such as community gardens and programming space, as well as additional improvements like stadium seating and water fountains.
The full design of the skatepark has not yet been finalized and will be subject to public input.
Over the course of the next year, the Skateboard Project plans on hosting several events to gather feedback from members of the community before the plans are completely finalized.
The organization will also renovate Brower Park Skate Park in Crown Heights.
