New York City Mayor Eric Adams was sued in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday by a woman claiming he sexually assaulted her in 1993 when they both worked for the city as police officers in the Transit Bureau.
In her lawsuit, Lorna Beach-Mathura said Adams exposed himself in a car and demanded oral sex. Beach Mathura said she was talking to Adams, who at the time was the head of the Police Guardians Association, also named in the suit, for career advice. After she refused his advances, Beach-Mathura said Adams forced her to grab his erect penis. After she took her hand away, Adams masturbated and ejaculated on her, according to the court document.
The lawsuit was filed before the expiration of the Adult Survivors Act later this year. The law allows adults over the age of 18 to file suit for sexual assault and abuse beyond the statute of limitations.
Beach-Mathura, currently a Florida resident, said Adams "preyed on her vulnerability" as a divorced, Black woman with young children, demanding a "quid pro quo sexual favor," which was an abuse of power, the lawsuit said. She felt obliged to file a lawsuit after the Adult Survivors Act became law and Adams became mayor, as she found his comments "hypocritical and sanctimonious," according to the court document.
