Howard Golden, who championed Brooklyn throughout his life, died on Wednesday at the age of 98.

Golden served in the City Council from 1970 to 1976, and was the Brooklyn Borough President from 1977 to 2001. He then served as the chair of the Brooklyn Democratic Party from 1984 to 1990.

Golden, also a lawyer, was a highly-respected leader who devoted his life towards championing and helping Brooklynites, the Brooklyn Democratic Party said through a statement.

He promoted inclusivity and unity in the Brooklyn Democratic Party while advancing Democratic leaders who had Brooklynites' best interests at heart. The lifelong public servant's astute leadership transformed Brooklyn into the borough we know today by promoting its economic revival and significant revitalization, the Party said.

A Flatbush native, Golden served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before he started his political career. He grew up in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood before moving to the Brooklyn Navy Yard area.

Funeral services will be held at Mount Hebron Cemetery, 130-04 Horace Harding Expressway, Flushing, N.Y. on January 26, at 10 a.m.
