Lifelong Brooklyn resident and community advocate Tony Herbert announced on Monday that he will run to represent the residents of the 41st District of the New York State Assembly.
This announcement follows the upcoming retirement of long-time Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein, according to a news release.
“Brooklyn is changing, but the reality remains that issues related to crime, economic affordability, and expanding protections around women's rights are still omnipresent,” Herbert said. “With over 20 years of experience in community advocacy, the private sector, and government, I have a unique perspective that will allow me to navigate the legislature efficiently and tackle the challenges facing our district.”
The district covers Sheepshead Bay, Flatlands, East Flatbush, Midwood and Canarsie.
Herbert currently works as the Citywide Housing Liaison for the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit. He has previously had jobs at a variety of financial institutions and the NYC Department of Finance.
He has also mentored youth in various Brooklyn communities, in addition to serving as an executive community member of the NAACP-NYCHA chapter and Vice President of First Responders Lions Club. He currently lives in Flatbush with his wife.
“When I first got involved in community advocacy, I was laser-focused on bringing communities and local police together to find solutions to the senseless violence impacting our neighborhoods. That experience of leading a call to action showed me the great power of people when united to relentlessly pursue a common goal for the good of our community and its families,” Herbert stated.
