Crown Heights residents fear being without a grocery store amid the construction of new housing units on Nostrand Avenue, where their local supermarket was located.
Brooklyn.news.12 reported that the construction of a 328-unit apartment resulted in the closure of the Associated Supermarket grocery store, forcing them to commute to access fresh grocery essentials.
"We want our store now. The inconvenience to the old and young. We could walk to the supermarket and now we have to take a bus, or a taxi," said one resident. Other locals who protested against the closure on Tuesday held placards written: "Feed the need, not greed".
The Hudson Companies said the store will reopen in 2025 as part of a bigger retail and residential complex.
