The young academics of Bed-Stuy's P.S. 5 are participating in the 16-week 'SOAR with STEM' program, a Medgar Evers College Pipeline initiative
On Friday, 4th-grade students from Bed-Stuy's Dr. Ronald E. McNair Public School 5 traded their neighborhood school classroom for a taste of college campus life. The 17 gifted students were chosen to take part in the "SOAR with STEM" program at Medgar Evers College (MEC).
The 16-week program is part of the Medgar Evers College Pipeline initiative and was created in collaboration with P.S.5. The program aims to expose students to STEM, a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. As part of the program, students will travel weekly to the college campus where they take classes taught by top professors in the field.
"We are excited to have you all here," said Dr. Terrance Blackman, dean of the Science, Health & Technology Department. "And we look forward to having you all go out and be successful leaders."
The Medgar Evers College Pipeline is an intentionally designed system by which students from Central Brooklyn are guided through a strong K-12 experience, transitioned into college and then provided high-quality opportunities to enter the professional world after graduation. The theory behind the MEC Pipeline is, that supporting schools through the initiative's "Whole Child, Whole Community" model will increase the capacity of not just the students, but also positively impact their families and the community as a whole.
A theory, that Bedford Stuyvesant's Dr. Ronald E. McNair Public School 5 whole-heartedly affirms. It's the school's central belief that every child has the right to a quality education which reflects high expectations and high academic standards, and that every child can, and will succeed in ways that mirror his or her own aptitude, interests and culture. And P.S.5 supports and welcomes collaborations among staff, parents and community groups as well as other academic institutions such as MEC and its College Pipeline program.
