Brooklyn nonprofit Sustainable United Neighborhoods (SUN) is hosting a special fundraiser benefitting rebuilding efforts in Puerto Rico on Thursday, June 27 at Bushwick Generator.
The benefit event will feature an abstract art and photography exhibition with works created by artist and radio personality Willie Ramos and photographer Eve Marrero, accompanied by special musical performances by African American-Filipino Latin soul legend Joe Bataan, Nicky Marrero of salsa super-troupe Fania All-Stars and Latin rap star Soundboy Cartegena a.ka. "Hip-Hop Jibarito."
Ramos has been involved in the art and music industries for more than three decades. On Thursday, he will showcase works from his abstract collection, "Art Meets Music," a series of pieces in oils and acrylics. Eva (Eve) Marrero is a nature enthusiast and a volunteer for her local going green committee, who discovered her passion for macro photography in Spring 2018. She has since captured the beauty of local parks and will present an eclectic selection of her collection.
In July, SUN in coordination with Helping Hands for PR will be sending teams of tradespeople, doctors and nurses who are volunteering as part of a multi-month relief mission in Vieques Island, Puerto Rico, to repair roofs, clean up homes and provide basic clinical services.
Thursday's event will raise funds for medical supplies, storm readiness kits and volunteers to help rebuild this island still ravaged by Hurricane Maria -- the deadliest natural disaster in the US in 100 years -- that devastated Puerto Rico, resulting in approximately 3,000 deaths and tens of billions of dollars in damage.
Attendees can support the fundraising efforts by participating in an art auction while enjoying light fare and a sangria bar. All proceeds will benefit the Puerto Rico relief efforts.
